Bernadette’s son Stephen, in her own words, was a happy , intelligent and ethical young man with many friends even though he was going through difficulties that caused him to experience bouts of depression and anxiety.

As a devoted and loving mother, Bernadette was seriously concerned and recommended that Stephen seek help and advice from outside of the family and who more trusted than his local GP.

One’s local GP are very often a real life saver when it comes to personal and sensitive difficulties that require a more objective listening from a confidant outside of the family.

Unfortunately today it is all too common to prescribe drugs as an immediate solution  until the resources of social services can be put in place to help deal with the situation.

Although the apparent lack of funding to the NHS budget limits social service resources and ability for a timely response to situations like Stephen’s, more relevant is that the medical profession has turned on its head. Previously, psychiatry was regarded as a peripheral practice. However, since Brock Chisholm’s address to the WFMH in Geneva psychiatry is now regarded within the profession as leaders and advisers in matters of mental health. How this came about is quite startling and illustrated in Chisholm’s speech.

This case CCHR London took through the NHS Complaints procedure which included the (now disbanded) Healthcare Commission and on to the Ombudsman. Both had decided that no irregularities had occurred and that all the correct procedures had been followed. Not surprising given psychiatry’s influence throughout the medical profession along with many other areas of social life.
