Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson

is yet one more in a long line of celebrity artists who have met an untimely death due to prescription drugs.

Furthermore, Dr Philip Treacy stated that he had administered the drug propofol to Michael on two occassions during his stay in Ireland. He further stated that it was almost impossible for Michael to have self-administered the drug and thus killed himself, an argument put forward by the defence attorney of Dr Conrad Murray who is accused of Michael’s death.
An autopsy report in 2009(pdf), stated “the cause of death is acute propofol intoxication,” this caused the Michael to stop breathing. Propofol is described as (a hypnotic drug used for general anesthesia, sedation and in veterinary medicine). The examiner also reported finding additional drugs such as; lorazepam ( benzodiazepine which is used to treat anxiety and insomnia); midazolam (another benzodiazepine, indicated for insomnia and medical sedation); lidocaine (a local anesthetic often included with propofol to relieve injection pain); diazepam (a benzodiazepine to treat anxiety, insomnia and alcohol withdrawal); and nordiazepam (a benzodiazepine-derived sedative, often used to treat anxiety) in Jackson’s bloodstream.

The medical examiner concluded that: “circumstances indicate that propofol and the benzodiazepines were administered by another. The propofol was administered in a nonhospital setting without any appropriate medical indication. The standard of care for administering porpofol was not met.” Thus supporting charges of homocide.

Propofol is not your run-of-the-mill sleeping aid.

Propofol however is not meant as a sleeping aid but as a general anesthetic. It puts people into general anesthesia—this is not what a sleeping aid does. Furthermore, it is not meant to be used at home but used by anesthesiologists in a clinical setting. So useing it as a sleep aid is totally off the mark.

Propofol has an extraordinarily narrow safety margin compared with most sedatives. It actually changes the body’s state very quickly and the patient goes unconscious and stops breathing. And it can affect breathing before the unconsciousness state begins. So even in trained hands, it is very difficult to titrate just where you want. It can be done, effectivel but only by those trained and educated. It acts inside of 60 seconds.

It is yet another tragic story of a highly talented individual falling into the hands of of those who would prescribe such powerful drugs which in most cases destroys the creativity that artists such as Michael possess, and which all too often ultimately brings about a wasteful and untimely death.

Michael Jackson’s personal physician, Dr Conrad Murray, has been found guilty of the involuntary manslaughter of the star by a jury in Los Angeles.

A panel of seven men and five women took two days of deliberation to reach a verdict.

Michael Jackson died on 25 June 2009 from an overdose of the powerful anaesthetic propofol.

Murray, 58, could now receive a maximum prison term of four years and lose his licence to practise medicine.

There was a shriek in the courtroom as the verdict was read.

Outside the courthouse, the BBC’s Peter Bowes said that at the moment the verdict was read, the crowd along the street erupted with cheers and chanting.

Jackson’s family sat in the courtroom, weeping quietly.

LaToya Jackson told the Associated Press news agency the family was overjoyed at the verdict.

“Michael was looking over us,” she said.

When the verdict was announced there was a stifled scream in the courtroom from the Jackson family entourage and a huge roar from the fans packed on to the pavement outside.

Police had to corral the crowds and shepherd the media from the main road as they gathered for the lunchtime verdict, crushed outside the court and clutching phones and touch pads to watch the announcement streamed live on the internet.

Some of the die-hard fans were in floods of tears as they celebrated the “relief” that “justice had been done”.

The jury of seven men and five women took less than a day and a half of deliberations to find Conrad Murray guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

Murray was the man Michael Jackson entrusted as his personal doctor and the man who provided him with propofol – the anaesthetic drug he was using to get to sleep.

The die-hard Jackson fans will have nothing to do now the trial is over, after having gathered each day in tribute to the king of pop and taken part in a daily lottery for a seat in the public gallery.

But they’ll be back at the end of the month when Dr Murray will appear again for sentencing – he faces a maximum of four years in jail.

  3. Frances Adamski says:

Murray killed MJ, plain and simple; all we hear about now is Corey Haim (who was a REAL drug addict). All MJ wanted was a good night’s sleep and to awake to be with his kids in the morning. Throw this slimebag doctor in jail and toss away the key; he had the prop delivered to his girlfriend’s address; a girlfriend with whom he had a child in Los Angeles in March 2009 while being “married” to a wife (with several kids) and having fathered several others over the years by other women. He’s a liar and a cheat, the worst of the worst.

  4. Conrad Murray, the doctor convicted of the involuntary manslaughter of Michael Jackson, has defended his use of propofol to put the singer to sleep.

In a TV interview recorded before the verdict, Murray, who did not testify at trial, said he gave Jackson an “inconsequential” amount of the drug.

A coroner found that he died in June 2009 of “acute propofol intoxication”.

The Jackson family say the interview, airing on NBC’s Today, gives Murray “a platform to shift the blame”.

Whitney Houston is yet another iconic figure cut down whilst on the powerful psychotropic drug Xanax.
It is vital that we realize what and who is behind the harming of artists who, at the height of their careers, become troubled and fall into the same insidious web of psychiatry and prescribed with such dangerous drugs.
