About Psychiatry
In order to explain about psychiatry it’s important to recognise it’s “hidden influence,” because psychiatry’s’ influence is becoming more pronounced and widespread in all strata of social endeavor. Prof. Norman Sartorious in his address to the Royal College of Psychiatrists entitled,”Globalization and the Future of Psychiatry,” on the 8th January 2008 stated that because of the way the public and the media view psychiatrists, it’s important to become “friends” and expert advisers on mental health matters. He urged attendees to rehearse speaking with the media and government figures and to raise their profile and create a more favorable image about psychiatry. One attendee commented that the public don’t like us as in the past we were seen as “excusing perverts.”
Prof. Sartorious further stated that specializations of psychiatry have now meant become much more diverse and widespread and therefore “the college” should now break away from the practitioner field and become advisers to the government and other bodies on matters of mental health.
At their 2008 Annual General Meeting, the College arranged for their members to attend mock media interviews in order to become expert with public speaking. A booth was set up showing articles of those psychiatrists who had already befriended the media. On touring the both, one psychiatrist was over-heard commenting that, “it didn’t do Raj much good when you see what happened to him,” referring to fellow psychiatrist Raj Persaud who became a TV personality until struck off by the GMC in 2008.
So a determined effort to influence and permeate all walks of life is well and truly taking place. Interestingly however, on what basis should influence be granted to psychiatry, are they truly in any position to advise on matters concerning mental health. Prof. Sartorious has been quoted saying that, “The time when psychiatrists considered that they could cure the mentally ill is gone. In the future the mentally ill have to learn to live with their illness.” The question then becomes, what is psychiatry’s real aim in actively securing this excessive influence over an ever growing number of the population in order to diagnose with a mental illness that has no scientific basis to support it’s existence. These issues should be known about psychiatry
Some have argued in support of psychiatry that because the subject itself is relatively new there is still much to discover about how the human mind works and that psychiatry is continually following that line of research. All very plausible and when we take this further and ask psychiatrists questions such as, “what causes mental illness?” or “how to cure a person with a mental illness” they reply, “we don’t know.” Dr. Mark Vonnegut was unable to explain the symptoms of ADHD and stated that “the profession kept changing the diagnoses.” This type of nonsense makes people wander about psychiatry, what the hell is going on!
So in spite of more than a century of research costing billions of pounds of tax payers money annually, the undisputed truth is “they don’t know” and it’s from this premiss we should be asking why then are we allowing our mental health system to adopt recommendations and methods of treatment and be unduly influenced by a group who, one for one, openly state that they don’t know? It’s time to look a little deeper and find out what this is all about.

However, if one “being detained” there are very few rights he or she can rely on and decisions are made about their affairs normally biased on their behavior and attitude towards the system that is keeping them against their will.
This is just one of many circumstances where psychiatry’s influence affects the individual’s human rights.
