ADHD – what is the answer?
Many parents and schools are not prepared to deal with ADHD. This general term can describe a variety of behaviors, and much of them are misunderstood or misdiagnosed. What is for certain is that when a child exhibits ADHD behaviors, the first thing many teachers want is for the parent to have their child treated using non-optimum remedies.
Taking a pill is the main choice for treating ADHD, and it can have some extremely intense side effects, including hallucinations, chest pain, sweating, increased blood pressure, muscle twitches, changes in vision and sudden verbal outbursts (Tourette’s Syndrome). Just because a child does not fit into the mold what a perfect child should be, does not mean they need this type of treatment.
There are alternative treatments that can be extremely effective including:
- Play therapy and counseling – sometimes children have fears, phobias, complexes, etc., that are overlooked or misunderstood by schools. Some children have a difficult time adapting to the structured day involved with attending class and need alternative programs.
- Dietary changes – it may be that your child has a food allergy. Common food allergies include gluten and wheat allergies, but any type of food allergy can cause extreme behavioral changes. It is a good idea to have food allergy testing conducted to see if any foods your child is eating may be affecting their mood.
- Supplements – a naturopath can suggest certain supplements that can have an effect on moods and helping your child to control them. Some commonly suggested supplements are Rhodiola and fish oils.
Ten years ago it was extremely common to use “chemical methods” to change children’s behavior. These days, we need to learn more about the causes for the behavior and treatment options before utilising those methods that turn children into zombies. If you have been to your family doctor and have not had the results you want, continue to investigate your options and don’t give up until you find a more acceptable solution to this so-called ADHD diagnoses.
